Failing.

They say a black belt is just a white belt that never quit. In that vein, I like to look back at my parental failings and try to learn from them constantly.

(Me, seconds away from being armbarred after fluffing a takedown)

When I feel frustrated at a VERY awake baby being rocked, fed and lullabied simply refusing to doze off…. When I want to do something else but need to watch her play for a while…. When I have to pay for some seemingly exorbitant doctors visit and feel a hint of resentment….. These are all opportunities to be better.

In real life I am still very much a white belt dad, not even 9months in at this point. I looked at my daughter this morning and had the thought that at this point she was inside the womb longer than she’s been outside in the world.

I’m new to this, but that thought showed me that so is she. She’s new to just being a human. She’s new to EVERYTHING that I’ve been doing for decades. It’s my job to help her learn.

To help her get to sleep peacefully. To play with her and let her learn, and keep her safe while doing so. To keep her healthy and happy.

Thats the gig. It’s tough at times but to be a black belt, we can’t quit.
